Job Description:

The Boston Globe is hiring part-time messengers to work varied weekly shifts. These are vital positions that are key to the newsroom's operation and offer a great entry-level opportunity for aspiring journalists. Our messengers do it all: Work the phones, chase competitive news stories, report and write bylined articles, and also help support our website, daily news operations, and longer-term projects.

Responsibilities:

Dayside:

  • Report and write daily spot and longer news stories and assist reporters with larger stories
  • Assist with research and data gathering
  • Chase tips: monitor police scanner and contact first responders, hospitals etc. for original content
  • Monitor Twitter and other social media for news tips/breaking news
  • Interact with the public, including answering phones, screening news tips, etc.
  • Office duties, including answering phones, sorting mail etc.
  • Additional duties as outlined by news editors

Nightside:

  • Report and write breaking news stories; assist staff reporters with larger stories; work on news features
  • Chase tips: monitor police scanner and contact first responders, hospitals etc. for original content
  • Monitor Twitter and other social media for news tips/breaking news
  • Monitor the local news tip e-mail file
  • Interact with the public, including answering phones; screening news tips, etc.
  • Compile TV news headlines for 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts for night City Desk editor
  • Populate the daily Lottery file
  • Additional duties as outlined by news editors

Qualifications: 

  • Journalism coursework or prior reporting experience preferred
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment 

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild
