Political Reporter (Washington, D.C. Bureau)

Washington, DC
Full Time
Entry Level

Job Description:

The Boston Globe is seeking a creative and motivated political reporter to join our Washington bureau.

This job offers the opportunity to join a bureau of five journalists known for its strong, enterprising work that is central to the Globe’s mission. The bureau has won two Pulitzer Prizes for Washington coverage in the past, and in 2020, the current group shared the prestigious Toner Prize for national political reporting.

Our readers are sophisticated and politically savvy, and as such, take Washington coverage seriously. So do we. We strive to break free of the press pack and drive thoughtful, unique coverage that holds government officials to account and demystifies the workings of Washington and campaigns.

Responsibilities:

We’re looking for an ideas-driven political reporter who is as comfortable cultivating sources within Washington as they are getting swing state voters to talk to them, and who is able to keep pace with the daily news cycle by delivering quick, newsy hits from Washington that will drive the political conversation of the moment.

This writer should be able to seek out a wide range of viewpoints and voices while paying special attention to the Massachusetts figures in the administration and on Capitol Hill who are major players within the party.

The successful candidate will have a track record of breaking news, sharp writing and distinct stories in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications:

  • Two years or more of experience as a reporter
  • A track record of breaking news and writing lively, accessible political stories on deadline.
  • A collegial approach to reporting and affinity for working collaboratively on a team.
  • A versatile and engaging writing style that encompasses breaking news as well as longer-form features and profiles.
  • An ideas-driven approach to reporting and a hunger to find angles and stories that aren’t being told—or to tell them in a new way.
  • An ability to represent the Globe and promote its work in media appearances and speaking engagements.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

This position will be based in the Globe's Washington, D.C., bureau.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
