Medical-Biotech Editor

The Boston Globe is looking for an experienced medical-biotechnology editor to lead an expanded team covering one of the world’s most vibrant and respected healthcare communities. This editor would be responsible for coverage of everything from the city’s teaching hospitals to the biotechnology boom in Cambridge’s Kendall Square to state and national healthcare policy as well as personal health and medical trends. Medical and biotech news in Boston often has national or even international impact, and the Globe needs a team leader who understands the science, the business and the context of medical and biotech developments while never losing sight of the people most affected by them.

This editor would manage a team of about six reporters who will generate a steady stream of stories ranging from breaking dailies to features and accountability stories developed over longer time periods. The editor will also be responsible for producing a weekly special section devoted to medicine and biotechnology.

A few other qualities that would make you a good fit for this position:

  • You’re an experienced leader who is comfortable managing a team of smart, highly motivated reporters.
  • You’re creative and enterprising for the Web and for print. You see fresh angles to storylines everywhere, and you’re a newshound who still gets a rush when you beat the competition.
  • You can oversee the most important, sensitive stories we cover here at the Globe, but you also see the value in a wide range of story approaches, including profiles and lighthearted yarns.
  • You think in terms of engaging the reader deeply with your team’s work, including nontraditional story approaches, social media, interactive graphics, video possibilities and podcasts.
  • You’re cool under the tightest deadlines, but you also know when to give reporters extra time, because it can make the difference between a good story and a great one. You’re attentive to analytics, but not defined by them, and you always trust your instincts on a good story.
  • Finally, you’re a collaborative editor who gets the most out of your high-performing team.

  • 10+ years journalism experience required, preferably including at least three years of medical or biotech editing.
  • Experience working for a daily news organization preferred.
  • Ability to edit 500-word dispatches and 2,000-word explainers with equal aplomb. You must be comfortable with the complexities of medical science, business and health care.
  • Willingness to adapt, to be audience-focused with a curious mindset and committed to creating an inclusive work environment.
  • This editor will be based in Boston post-pandemic.
