Deputy Director of Photography
The Boston Globe is seeking a deputy director of photography who can lead an award-winning team of picture editors and photographers.
Job Description:
The deputy director of photography will help oversee the department’s day-to-day operations, including working collaboratively within and outside the department, mentoring photographers, brainstorming stories with strong visual content, and helping to invigorate the photo department's vision. The photo staff at the Globe consists of a director of photography, two picture editors, day and night shifts on the photo desk, and 12 photographers. The team also includes an archivist, a summer intern photographer, and a co-op student who photographs and assists with other departmental needs.
The candidate should have strong news judgment, and have significant management experience working in a newsroom environment. Collaboration with others, whether it be in a breaking news situation or in story/project development is paramount. Duties will include picture editing for the website Bostonglobe.com as well as the print newspaper.
The deputy director of photography is a management position, and the candidate will be expected to be a visual leader as well as have the ability to build relationships, collaborate, and problem-solve with others across the organization.
Responsibilities:
- The ability to react to live, breaking news, and select the best images to appear in the Boston Globe and its website.
- Researching and building photo galleries for the website.
- Picture editing of politics, business, international news, entertainment and sports.
- Exhibiting strong news judgment and the ability to work in a fast-paced news environment.
- Acting as a gatekeeper for content, monitoring what could be deemed offensive or inappropriate for public consumption.
- Working alone and/or collaborating with fellow editors to distill the visual edit so that it illustrates the essence of the story, and have the ability to articulate decisions.
- Coaching and motivating photographers to produce the best work they are capable of.
- A share of administration duties within the department.
- Working with colleagues in vetting third-party imagery to determine licensing and ability to publish.
- Schedule flexibility, depending upon the needs of the organization, in a fast-paced, 24/7 operation.
- Experience with content management systems, Abobe Photoshop and PhotoMechanic.
- Any other duties as may be assigned.
