State House Accountability Reporter
Job Description:
The Boston Globe is hiring a State House reporter to cover state government and politics with a focus on the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services.
Health and human services is the largest state government secretariat and is home to 11 agencies, including the department of public health and the department of children and families, among others. The reporter who fills this position must be someone who can consistently produce journalism that holds the state's officials to account. The reporter must be able to give voice to the state's most vulnerable people — foster children, homeless families, victims of abuse — and show how state policies and bureaucracy affect them.
The candidate must possess the ability to write accurately on deadline, translating the old-fashioned language of lawmaking, the speechifying of politicos, and the spin of operatives into clear copy that cuts through the noise, and tells the story with enthusiasm, authority and urgency.
The reporter should be indefatigable in creating a roster of sources and calling them, crafting a constant stream of story ideas.
Experience reporting from a State House or on state agencies is a plus. This position will be based out of the Boston Globe's bureau in the Massachusetts State House.
Responsibilities:
- Primarily include watchdog coverage of state government, with a focus on Health and Human Services and an eye toward revealing wrongdoing.
Qualifications:
- At least 5 years experience as a journalist at a major publication.
- An excellent journalist who can write accurately and clearly about complex subject matters on tight deadlines
- A vibrant writer who can craft copy with sweep and authority
- A fearless reporter who is comfortable taking on powerful institutions and people
- A person who can work in a collaborative setting and thrives on the energy of a group working toward a common goal.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild
