Job Description: 

The Boston Globe is looking for an experienced audio producer to capture some of the best of our journalism and help shape the Globe’s future in podcasting. This person must be a journalist and keen observer of the news with strong editorial judgment and the ability to assemble audio stories that will captivate a regional audience.

They must have 3-5 years of experience producing audio and a deep understanding of what’s required to tell an audio story well. This role is integral to the Globe’s ambition to build on the success of shows like Gladiator, Last Seen, and Love Letters. The person who fills it must be willing and able to adapt to newsroom priorities – capable of jumping on breaking news stories and working under tight deadlines, but also adept at thinking laterally and helping sculpt complicated narratives.

The Globe’s new Audio Producer will be stepping into a dynamic newsroom, tasked with helping the Head of Audio capture the best stories for the ears of listeners in New England and far beyond. 

We want someone who is brimming with ideas, willing to take creative risks, able to work with print reporters and help guide them in the finer points of how to tell a great audio news story.

Creativity is a must. So is journalistic rigor. 

Responsibilities:

  • Attending news meetings, listening for stories with audio potential
  • Pitching, producing, writing and mixing audio news stories
  • Helping with the development and launch of new programs
  • Arranging, recording, directing, and producing interviews in studio and in the field
  • Technical abilities include recording interviews, gathering clean audio, editing interviews and mixing with multiple tracks
  • Working with reporters and hosts on studio tracking
  • Writing, editing, and workshopping show scripts
  • Producing and mixing episodes for review
  • Show & episode conception and planning
  • Assisting with show promotion, newsletter copy, social media demands, and creative assets as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3-5 years’ experience working in audio
  • Strong understanding of journalistic conventions on ethics, fairness & accuracy
  • Track record as a team player who can demonstrate creativity, collegiality, independence, and attention to detail
  • Extensive knowledge of the audio storytelling/podcast market & platforms
  • Entrepreneurial spirit; willingness to embrace uncertainty and lack of definition as opportunities evolve
  • Facility with basics of audio work, including file transferring, asset management, and other collaborative tools
  • Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and multi-task in a high-pressure environment
  • Story editing experience is a plus
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
