Experienced

Job Description:

The Boston Globe is looking for a creative and energetic editor to help identify, edit, and shepherd investigations for the Spotlight unit.

This person will serve as deputy to the Spotlight editor and will directly oversee several reporters dedicated to quick-strike investigations – a team that recently won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. The aim is to be nimble and ready to bring an accountability lens to big stories of the moment, while also adept at spotting and shepherding work that merits a long-term project treatment.

The deputy editor should have leadership skills and a track record of high impact accountability work. This person should have an excellent ability to visualize stories and guide reporters through various minefields, including fights over public records, data analyses, and more. We are looking for someone that’s highly collaborative and has a deft editing hand, as well as a deep understanding of digital media across platforms. They also will be responsible for helping foster an accountability mindset and investigative ethos throughout the newsroom.

This position is part of an expansion of the Globe’s storied Spotlight unit.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct supervision of several investigative reporters, as well as close collaboration with the Spotlight Editor on various projects/duties
  • Oversight of stories from ideation to publication. This entails working closely with visual, digital, audio, or video colleagues to present our work in the best way possible
  • Advocacy and involvement in various records or legal matters, including efforts that strengthen access to information or documents.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, at least seven years of journalism experience and three years of editing experience
  • Impeccable news judgment, with a keen eye for issues, topics, or trends that call for deeper investigations
  • An accountability mindset, an imbued sense of skepticism, and – when needed – a sense of outrage. Our guiding principle is impact.
  • The editing chops to guide, shape, and polish some of the Globe’s most ambitious stories and projects
  • Organization and leadership skills, including the ability to juggle short- and long-term projects
  • Digital acumen – from SEO in headlines to writing scripts for audio/video. You should be comfortable helping push our journalism in a variety of ways and on different platforms.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

Please send a resume, cover letter, and links/details to at least three investigative projects you’ve worked on.

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.
